The Heirloom Mirror - a True Ghost Story
by: R. Eason

Thomas inherited an old family mirror after his mother passed away. He thought that he might restore it in his spare time - whenever that would be. Between work, family and a start up business he didn't know exactly when he would get the time to restore it. His wife Kat cleaned it up a little and displayed it in one of the rooms in the house.

Next to the mirror was a dresser that had a drawer stuck. Thomas and Kat decided to do a quick fix on the drawer. In the middle of the repair Kat caught an odd reflection in the mirror out of the corner of her eye. Upon closer inspection, she realized that it wasn't really a reflection on the surface; it was just under the surface. Thomas finished the repair and went downstairs. She approached the mirror and the anomaly was gone. She dusted off the mirror and dismissed the odd light. A few weeks later she decided that she was going to place the mirror in her bedroom where it was a little safer and away from the playful dogs. She asked Thomas to assist her in taking it down stairs. As they were moving it down the awkward stairs, she noticed the anomaly again.

She dismissed it and concentrated on getting it down the stairs in one piece and safely displayed in the master bedroom.

A week passed and she noticed the odd reflection only once in a while. The odd reflection was a quick flash of colors and sometimes she would recognize shapes.

This went on for almost a month. At first there didn't seem to be a pattern to when she saw this. It might be during the early morning, or late in the evening. It wasn't a trickery of light due to the sunrise or sunset. The more that she thought about it, the more puzzled she became. She thought about keeping a journal and track every time she saw the anomaly, but realistically she knew that she would never actually write it down. She was sitting on the bed taking a long look at the mirror. Thomas walked in to grab his car keys and she saw it again. She asked him if he saw that. Absently, he replied that he saw his car keys earlier and knew where they were. She shook her head in disbelief and looked back at the mirror. This time she saw people! She did not recognize them at all. She grew excited, grabbed Thomas and pointed at the mirror.

She asked him "Do you see them?" Wide eyed and confused Thomas didn't know what she was referring to. He gave her a loving peck on the cheek and said I have to run, can't be late. She turned back to look at the mirror and it was back to normal.

She sat on the bed and stared at the mirror. In an instant she understood. The mirror is connected to Thomas. She only saw the strange reflections and the people when Thomas was around the mirror. The people must be connected to Thomas! Exhilarated and positive that the mystery was solved, she smiled to herself.

The next time she visited with Thomas' sister she would ask her if she has any old photos of the family.
